June 2009 - Totalserve’s associated law firm, E. Economides & Partners LLC recently co-hosted the 6th Shiparrested.com Members’ Meeting in Limassol, Cyprus.
Attended by more than 60 shipping lawyers from all over the world, the annual event acted as a platform for the network’s members to share their specialized knowledge and expertise with their fellow professionals and a good number of industry guests present.
On behalf of E. Economides & Partners LLC, Peter Economides, Chairman of Totalserve, analyzed in his opening remarks the advantages of Cyprus as a European business center and offered the participants a glimpse into the island’s shipping industry. He also updated attendees on the latest developments in the island’s fiduciary services sector.
Representing the Cyprus Shipping Council, guest speaker Thomas Kazakos, announced that the day before the Meeting, the European Commission released its much-anticipated new and detailed guidance on state aid granted to shipmanagement companies, which brought Cyprus and Malta one step closer to retaining their favorable tonnage tax systems. (see separate article in the News section of the Totalserve web site.)
The presentations covered issues on Ship Arrest practices in Finland, Norway, Malta, Canada, Cameroon, industrial actions against vessels and more.
Besides the seminar which was held on June 12 and was Co-Chaired by Zambartas Law Offices, the members’ visit to Cyprus also included a welcome dinner at the residence of Mr and Mrs Economides and an exciting social program, visiting the city of Paphos and enjoying the local delicacies.
